After a wretched childhood, orphaned Jane Eyre yearns for new experiences. She accepts a governess position at Thornfield Hall, where she tutors a lively French girl named Adele. She soon finds herself falling in love with the brooding master of the house - the passionate Mr. Rochester. Jane gradually wins his heart, but they must overcome the dark secrets of the past before they can find happiness. When Jane saves Rochester from an eerie fire, she begins to suspect that there are many mysteries behind the walls of Thornfield Hall. Her fears are confirmed when Rochester's secret past is revealed, destroying her chance for happiness, and forcing Jane to flee Thornfield. Penniless and hungry, she finds shelter and friendship in the shape of a kind clergyman and his family. But she is soon shocked to uncover the deeply hidden truth of her own past. « Beautiful ! » Though ashamedly I have not read the book, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It was just beautiful ! :) What woman wouldn't want a Mr. Rochester of her own. *sigh* <3 For anyone who enjoys period dramas, this is a must see! I like to watch movies with subtitles on, especially if it's an English movie in case I can't understand a word or two because of pronunciation... and this DVD, like BBC's Pride and Prejudice, does not have subtitles, grrr. Wish they'd fix that. .:. Rating: 5 / 5

« Best yet! » My husband and I are great fans of the BBC literature classics. Many of their dramas have been remade over the years, none more than Jane Eyre. We have enjoyed compairing and contrasting the remakes. Many well known actors and actresses have played the roles, and each has done fine work and all are quite entertaining. However, in our opinion, none come close to the quality and entertainment value of this latest remake. The cinematography, sets, wardrobe, acting and directing are first class. I'm sure this movie would have done well as a major theatrical release. If you have not seen this version of Jane Eyre, by all means, do. If contemplating purchasing this DVD for your collection or as gifts, you will be making a wise decision. This version of Jane Eyre will be the one the others will be weighed against. .:.
